This an interesting note-taking workflow! I use zotero for my references, too. Have you tried Muse on the ipad? It’s similar to Milanote but it’s made to work on the iPad. They have a desktop version now, but the full version with desktop is costly. The free version on iPad is fun to play around with ideas.
